Call for Papers - Special issue on Ageing and Generations

The November 2009 issue of the international journal Gender & Development will focus on Ageing, and the relationship of elderly people to younger generations. It will be co-edited by Caroline Sweetman of Oxfam GB, and Penny Vera Sanso, of Birkbeck College, University of London.

The issue will look at these issues from a gender and development perspective, starting by recognising the positive economic and social contributions made by older women and men to their families, communities, and wider society. It will feature real-life case studies showing the current challenges facing older women - and men - in particular contexts, for example as caregivers for grandchildren, and consider whether the responses of development policymakers are adequate. The discrimination faced by many older women, in particular, prevents them from voicing their opinions and realising their rights. We aim to challenge development policymakers and practitioners to support the interests and needs of older people, and consider why the issues critical to elderly women and men remain 'on the sidelines' of gender and development.

Contributions are invited from development researchers and workers who have experience to share with their peers, and with policymakers and decision-makers in development agencies and governments.
