Our first Newsletter “Gender identity in the transitional period in Vietnam” was published in July 2010 and we received very positive feedback from readers who requested more information of this sort. This second newsletter is published to coincide with the National Conference on HIV/AIDS being held to mark World AIDS Day 2010, and the subject of this newsletter is “Integrating gender and sexuality into HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Programmes”.
Researches show that integrating gender, reproductive health and sexuality issues is an important factor in improving the lives of people living with, and those affected by HIV/AIDS. Almost all HIV/AIDS programmes acknowledge the importance of gender mainstreaming, however not every programme officer knows how to effectively mainstream gender into processes such as programme design and management. Thus there is still a big gap related to sexual and reproductive rights of people living with HIV and AIDS in current HIV/AIDS programmes in Viet Nam. Whilst many programmes have focused upon harm reduction, issues such as sexual rights and fertility assistance which are of great concern to people living with HIV and AIDS have not been given so much attention.
This newsletter aims to introduce readers to these topics, such as WHO guidelines on providing care for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of HIV positive women and lessons learnt from USAIDS in gender mainstreaming in HIV/AIDS programmes. The newsletter also contains information about needs assessments for sexual and reproductive health services for people living with HIV/AIDS as well as other gender mainstreaming models used in Vietnam. In conclusion the newsletter shares information about how people living with HIV/AIDS raised their voices at the Sixth ASEAN People’s Forum. We hope that this second newsletter will be useful not only for professionals/individuals who are working in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention but also for those people living with HIV and AIDS who are claiming their rights to enjoy to lead enjoyable and healthy sexual lives.
