| | Sex Work in Vietnam: What are the Implications for HIV/AIDS Prevention? | | 03:43' AM - Friday, 25/11/2005 | | This paper explores the social and cultural contexts in which female sex workers (FSWs) and their clients practice risk-related sexual behaviors. The findings were gained from an ethnographic study conducted in a Mekong delta province of Can Tho. Data shows that the fear of being arrested during the “social evils” campaign is the primary reason for practicing unsafe sex or non-use of condoms among FSWs and their clients. Mobile and unofficial status of sex work is the constraint for FSWs to access to and use of condoms. Decisions about condom use are almost entirely determined by the male client. FSWs have neither economic resources nor negotiating power to demand condom use from a potential paying client, while clients make the decision based on their personal preference and beliefs related to sexual pleasure and “safe” sex. The study suggests that the harm reduction approach and men”s interventions need to be widely advocated and promoted in behavior change communications program for FSWs and their clients.
