“Connections for a Healthy Future” was the title of the workshop Health and HIV/AIDS which took place on September 25 by CCIHP and VICOMC within the framework of APF6. There were more than 90 participants from a wide range of organizations that worked in the field of Health and HIV in the ASEAN region. The workshop aimed to share experiences about building effective healthcare systems and in particular looked at how to involve the community, especially vulnerable groups, in the provision of health care services. The workshop made recommendations on health and HIV policies to ASEAN countries and participants pledged to develop a joint action plan to help co-ordinate the efforts of ASEAN CSOs to accelerate efforts in research, program and advocacy on health care and HIV and AIDS prevention, care and treatment.

The participants discuss
Challenges in these areas, include a lack of reliable data among ASEAN countries on the health needs (including needs of SRH and HIV care and treatment) of vulnerable groups; the sustainability of the provision of ART supplies, which are currently heavily funded by international donors. The participants made recommendations to the ASEAN governments that they should devote more of their national budgets to health care and more attention needs to be paid to the health needs of vulnerable people. To achieve this, the needs of vulnerable need to be better understood and their voices listened to.

Join action plan
At the end of the workshop, all participants agreed to establish an ASEAN Health Equity Platform (ASHEP) to facilitate the sharing of information, advocacy and effectiveness of interventions in HIV prevention and control.
